I, too, deeply appreciate Dan's service and wish him and his family the very best of luck in surmounting this challenge.

Now, a short PSA. Like Dan's family and so many others, mine too has confronted mental illness. Last year, I joined the board of the Georgia arm of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) - http://www.nami.org/.

For anyone else out there suffering through it alone, please consider investigating your state and local NAMI affiliates. They can offer considerable support and comfort for the mentally ill and their families. Inexplicably, many mental health care professionals either don't know about NAMI or don't mention us to their clients or patients. A true light under a bushel, as it were.

Subject: My resignation

In light of Bill Shaw's email, I feel I need to address my sudden resignation. I sincerely apologize for any disruption that this has caused. My wife Andrea and I are caring for our son who suffers from a severe mental illness, and my resignation will help on that front. My discussion with the EC ended with a mutual agreement that it would be best if I resigned. I wish only best for our fine academy. See you all in San Juan.
