Hello.
My name is Michael Mellas. I am a graduate student of theatre pursuing a
Masters with an emphasis in directing. Next semester I will be directing
Cloud Tectonics by Jose Rivera as part of the Department of Theatre's 2007-
08 season. Rivera is a contemporary playwright born in Puerto Rico raised
in NYC, and Cloud Tectonics, like many of his plays, deals with (among
other things) what it means to be Latino in a white-Anglo dominant culture
that does not always accept or value differences. It explores the struggle
between familial and communal history that does not always coincide with an
individual's present or future, and it does this in ways very specific to
Rivera's Puerto Rican heritage.
I am trying to communicate with the different Latino communities on Miami's
campus to develop and encourage interest. If anyone is interested in
auditioning, auditions will be Sunday November 17th with call-backs on
Monday November 18th (the Sunday and Monday before Thanksgiving break).
Please sign up for auditions outside the Theatre Department's office in
Hiestand. There will be a few meetings for the play at the end of this
semester, and rehearsals will begin in earnest at the very beginning of
next semester. The play itself will be February 6-10th, 2008.
Could you please communicate these dates with the Latino American Graduate
Student Association, or direct me to the best way to communicate this with
the Latino American Graduate Student Association? If there are any
questions, please send me an e-mail.
Thank you for your time.
