On Wednesday, April 5, MUGLBA will be participating in National Day of
Silence, as part of our Awareness Week. The purpose of this day is to raise
awareness of issues faced by GLBT people, especially those who, for whatever
reason, must stay silent about their sexual orientation. More information
is available at http://www.youth-guard.org/dayofsilence/. Participants agree
to be silent for 8 hours - from 8 AM to 5 PM - of this day. In lieu of
speaking, they display cards that explain the reason for their silence. The
cards read as follows:
"Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I support lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgender rights. People who are silent today believe
that laws and attitudes should be inclusive of people of all sexual
orientations. The Day of Silence is to draw attention to those who have
been silenced by hatred, oppression, and prejudice. Think about the voices
you are not hearing. What can you do to end the silence?"
The theme of this year's Day of Silence Project is "Unity Through
Diversity." We would therefore like to diversify our participation by
inviting groups and individuals other than those normally associated with
GLBA to join us. If you believe in the statement above, and would like to
see our community become more aware of GLBT issues, please make a commitment
to participate in this day.
If you are interested, please email me at [log in to unmask] or call me at
664-6091 to request an informational packet. Let me know how many people
will be participating and I will include an appropriate number of cards.

Thank you,
Elizabeth Skipper
Co-VP, MUGLBA

P.S. Please forward this email (or pass on the message in any other way) to
whomever you think might be interested, including group members, employees,
listservs, etc. Thanks.
