Subject: Seeking Referrals from the Graduate Students of Color Association
(GSCA)
Dear Nicole Sherman,
Hello there! I noticed on the Miami student activities website that you
are active
with the Graduate Students of Color Association (GSCA), and I was hoping
you may be able to help me identify graduating students or alums
interested in social
justice issues affecting minorities and low income communities. We will be
visiting
the Miami campus on Tuesday, April 12th at 7:30 p.m. in Laws Hall, Room
215 to recruit spring graduating students and alums interested in careers
in community organizing.
As you may know, the DART Center has been conducting a paid training
program for those seeking a career in community organizing for the last
several years, and has enabled dozens of people to launch permanent
salaried positions in the field. It's an excellent opportunity for people
interested in organizing at the local level around common issues
affecting low-moderate income communities like affordable housing,
immigrant rights, access to healthcare, quality public education, youth
services, crime, etc.
Let me know if you direct referrals to certain students involved with the
Graduate
Students of Color Association (GSCA) with a known interest in social
justice issues affecting minorities and low income communities. I would
be happy to provide
a personal invitation to our Info Session by phone or email anyone that
you know
that will graduate this spring with an interest in this area. Though I
have learned
over the years that the personal invite seems to work the best, I was also
wondering
if you could make an announcement during an upcoming meeting or pass along
an announcement to any relevant list serves. I have provided a brief
description below and a flyer attached for the DART Center, and our
efforts on campus. Please
feel free to forward this announcement to available list serves, fellow
student groups leaders, interns, or to anyone you know that might be
interested in pursuing
this line of work.
Thank you for your help, and please let me know about certain students you
could
recommend.
Sincerely,
Ben MacConnell

Community Organizing Jobs Available to Graduating Miami Students and Alums!
Representatives from the Direct Action & Research Training (DART) Center
will be on the Miami University campus on Tuesday, April 12th at 7:30
p.m. in Laws Hall, Room 215 to discuss vocational careers in the field of
community organizing,
and to interview graduating students with an interest in social justice
issues affecting minorities and low income communities.
The DART Center is a nonprofit network of affiliates, founded in 1982 to
assist in the development of strong, congregation-based, grassroots
community organizations
committed to democratic principles and values of justice and fairness. The
DART Network currently consists of 21 affiliates spread throughout
Florida, Michigan,
Ohio, Virginia, Indiana, and Kentucky, each with their own leaders, staff,
funding
base, and accomplishments toward justice at the local level. DART has
fought and won across the country on a broad set of issues like
joblessness, access to health care, living wage and job source
agreements, police misconduct, improved
public education, quality affordable housing, fair immigration practices,
and dozens of others. We are broadening our power into new communities
throughout the country by training a new generation of community
organizers
During our visit to the Miami campus, representatives from DART will
discuss how community organizers:
· Develop and training leaders to take successful action on community
problems · Identify and train local leaders
· Strengthen communities through One-on-One relationship building
We will also accept applications and schedule interviews with anyone
interested in launching a career in community organizing through the DART
Organizers Institute,
a summer, paid training program in grassroots organizing. This program is
designed
to give people the skills in grassroots organizing to launch a permanent
career in the field within the DART Network.
The Information Session will take place on the Miami University campus on
Tuesday,
April 12th at 7:30 p.m. in Laws Hall, Room 215. If you are interested, but
