Subject: NHD: More Good News! NHD forms partnership with NYTimes

I am pleased to announce that NHD has formed a partnership with the New York
Times.

The Times has agreed to help sponsor NHD in New York City, New York state, New
Jersey, and Connecticut, as well as nationally.

The Times will sponsor:

1. A national poster that will announce NHD 2000, "Turning Points in
History." The poster should be available by June. We hope to hand them out
at this year's national contest. They will definately be available to all of
you and your district coordinators this summer and next fall for you to send
to teachers and schools. 250,000 will be printed, so place big orders so lots
of students in your states can have a copy! Kirsten will be in touch soon
requesting your order.

2. Ads in the Times announcing the contest winners, including a full-page ad
which will include all of the national winners.

3. Co-sponsorship of the 2000 curriculum book. This will also be available
in June, so Kirsten will be looking for your orders as in the past three
years.

4. Partial sponsorship of the NHD 1999 summer teacher institute.

5. Awards for students in every state for the best entries using newspapers
as resources in the junior and senior divisions (you should treat this like
any other special prize; one per division). You will soon receive
certificates for the students, almanacs and classroom subscriptions for the
Times Newspaper in Education program for the teachers of the winning students.

The catch? Most of the recognition for Times support will come from this
office (and in NY, CT, and NJ since the Times is a doing a little more in
those states). All you need to do is hand out the awards to deserving
students and teachers, announce that the awards are sponsored by The New York
Times, and indicate so in your contest program. This is a nice way to reward
more students at your contests.

If the certificates, etc. do not arrive in time for your state contests (as it
is getting late), you might announce the award and then forward the
certificates, etc.

Happy History Day!

Cathy
