Subject: NHD: 1999 Summer Institute on the Civil War

I am pleased to announce that NHD will conduct a summer teacher institute on
the Civil War and Emancipation: Turning Points in History.  The program will
take place July 11 - 16 and home base will be here at UMCP.  It is designed to
help teachers start thinking about next year's theme.

The program includes field trips to Antietam Battlefield, the National
Archives, and the White House.  There will be presentations by prominent
scholars, sessions related to translating the intellectual material into the
classroom, lots of emphasis on using primary sources, etc.

You will be receiving a memo about this with brochures that we hope you will
send to targeted teachers whom you think might be interested and whom you
believe will be willing to conduct sessions at social studies conferences
and/or work with you on NHD sponsored teacher workshops.

We will cover the following expenses for the teachers:  housing and meals on
campus, books and other materials, and field trips.  We cannot cover
transportation from their homes to the institute.
