Each year, with support from a generous endowment established by the Caspar
family, Middletown brings in a visiting speaker on an issue of national or
internationl significance. This year the lecturer is Benno C. Schmidt,
president and CEO of the Edison Project. The Edison Project is a privately
sponsored, nationwide educational endeavor aimed at enhancing education
within current public school spending levels. The Edison Project has
created an innovative model for educatin which has been implemented in over
50 public schools which it operates under management cotnracts with local
schoold districts or charter school boards.

Benno C. Schmidt served as the 20th President of Yale Unviersity and before
that Dean of Columbia University Law School. He is a specialist in
constitutional law, the history of the U.S> Supreme Court, the law of
freedom of experession and the history of race relations in American law.
He served as law clerk to Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren.

For more information on the Edison Project see:
http://www.edisonproject.com/intro.html

Benno Schmidt's lecture will be at 8 pm, Thursday, Aprill 22 in the
Finkelman Auditorium. There is usually an informal question and answer
session with students and the public sometime in the afternoon before the
Caspar Lecture. More on that when it is scheduled.

If you are concerned about education as students, parents, teachers, and/or
future parents and teachers -- this is a great opportunity to learn more
about possible directions in education.

Thanks and I hope to see many of you there.
