I write to announce the debut of a new web site, "Whole Cloth:
Discovering Science and Technology Through American Textile History."
The site, developed by the Society for the History of Technology in
collaboration with teachers, is aimed at middle and high school
students and teachers of social studies. Three modular units, Early
Industrialization, True Colors and Synthetic Fibers, begin to trace the
history of textile technology in ways that link to the American history
survey course. The site also has material that would interest college
students and is particularly well suited for use in projects that pair
college and high school teachers.
These curriculum materials include teacher and student essays, lesson
plans, slide shows, videos, and documents. Other collaborators on the
project include the National Science Foundation; the Lemelson Center
for the Study of Invention and Innovation, National Museum of American
History, Smithsonian Institution; and the Center for Children and
Technology.
You can access "Whole Cloth" at:
http://www.si.edu/lemelson/centerpieces/whole_cloth
We'd love to hear how people use the site and urge you to register when
you go on-line so we can keep you informed of new developments.
