Hey guys,
I received this email from Rachel Myers in regards to the art display. She makes an important point. I think it should be raised at the discussion. Please read through her response at the bottom, to the emailer I sent out a few days ago. We need to be aware of all the facts of the event and address it properly tomorrow night. Let me know what you think, thanks!
Pooja

Subject: Art Display
I'm not sending this message in anger, but I really feel that people are not showing the whole picture, when it comes to the art display. I can't be there Thursday, but I think it is important that something is said, especially from someone who is involved in art.
This work is not about Racism!
The work is entitled Growing Up and represents the death of child. The swing represents childhood, and the nooses represent death as well as 7 decades.
The students involved also had permission from their professor and from an art faculty member. If this was in any way racist it would have been stopped from the beginning.
Ignorance of Artistic interpretation is no reason to punish these students. Especially since they had received permission to hang the display.
I believe that their only fault is not informing the university and releasing the title and message, so that the campus could be informed and for putting the display on such a busy road (since it was only to be viewed by other classmates and the professor).
These students were not trying to send and messages of racism and therefore we can not penalize them for racist behavior. The university needs to take more into consideration before taking any actions.
