Dear JRN majors,
Jim Tobin and I will be team-teaching a large section JRN 101 class in spring term -- TR 12:45-2 -- and we are looking for several seniors (or juniors who are nearly finished with their JRN major and have experience as reporters) to serve as Undergraduate Associates or Assistants (UA) to help with the class. One undergrad associates program is offered though Honors but is available to non-honors students. Honors students may do the program to earn credit as an honors experience. The UA program is a usually a one-credit experience and requires a commitment of 30 hours for the semester. But we also can make this an independent study project for those of you who are looking for more credits.
In addition we are also pairing this class with a capstone experience --JRN 421: Coaching News Writers (offered at the same time). Cheryl Gibbs will oversee this course as a complement to the 101 course. Both Gibbs and the UAs from last year thought it would be a good idea to have a course on coaching and editing writing. This course is set up at the same time as the 101 course (which you usually will not be required to attend). For those of you who want to do the UA 101 experience but cannot take this new 421 course, just let us know. (It is possible to do two capstones and count one of them as a "creative" class.)
In terms of duties, we am looking for experienced reporters/editors to lead a small team of JRN 101 students on a special project in which we aim for producing (in term of radio or TV) or publishing (in terms of print or online) a work of journalism. Last year we partnered and published with Cox area newspapers, the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Cincinnati Business Courier, and the Miami Student. UAs will play a major role in figuring out what that special project will be and will serve as project editors. There will also be other editing work and preliminary grading of student work.
If you are interested, please email me or Dr. Tobin and let us know. Please see me or Cheryl Gibbs if you have questions about scheduling.
Thank you.
