DEADLINE IN THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FOR RECEIPT OF NOMINATIONS IS FRIDAY,
MARCH 26, 2004.

Again next year the College of Arts and Science will sponsor four
English Department seniors' research under the Dean's Scholars
program.

Each selected senior will receive a $750 professional expense stipend to
be used in connection with the project; each Faculty Mentor will also
receive $750 in professional expenses to mentor the student.
These funds will be available in September.

Dean's Scholars in English will conduct Independent Study for
Departmental Honors (ENG 480). Each nomination form must therefore have
attached a detailed Independent Study proposal and a completed
Independent Study permit. Packets of the Dean's Scholar nomination
form, the Independent Study proposal, and the Independent Study
permit will be available at the reception desk in 356
Bachelor.

This opportunity is available for students graduating in May 2005
(December 2004 graduates are not eligible). Superior students who are
already considering Departmental Honors, and juniors who were not
selected for Undergraduate Summer Scholarships, should be particularly
encouraged to apply. Please remember that the grade point average
required for departmental honors is 3.5 in all English courses (except
111-2-3), not 3.5 overall.

Since the Department must designate its four scholars to the Dean on
Thursday, April 1, completed nomination packets must be placed in Dr.
Hardesty's mailbox in 356 Bachelor by the close of business on Friday,
March 26.
