Students:

Thanks to Justine Timoteo, MU-SPJ PR czar, for pushing the annual MOE
deadlines.

But with no entries in hand at this hour, I am going to extend the deadline
to next Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 5 p.m.

Why should you enter this annual, national student journalism competition?
1. You'll be recognized at the regional SPJ convention, set for April 9-10,
2010, in Cleveland.
2. If you win in Cleveland, you'll be recognized at the national convention,
set for Oct. 3-6, 2010, in Las Vegas.
3. You'll have a great line for your resume.
4. You'll share your award-winning journalism with a much larger audience.
5. You'll save your MU-SPJ adviser the disappointment of sitting at these
awards events year after year and watching students from OU, Kent State,
Marshall, etc., grab up all the awards.

Miami JRN students do VERY GOOD work. Why not get some recognition for it?

Entries are now required online (with a few exceptions). If you can shop via
Amazon.com, you can navigate the online MOE system. You will need to list me
as the MU-SPJ chapter adviser, with my phone number as 513.529.5893. Get
started at http://awards.spj.org/.

If you make the early-bird deadline -- remember it's now Wednesday, Dec. 16,
5 p.m. to my mailbox in Bachelor 260 -- MU-SPJ will pay half of your fee.
Just select the "pay by check" option and leave a printout with your entry.
Make your share of your entry to "MU-SPJ."

If you miss the Wednesday deadline, you can still enter on your own through
Jan. 27.

Questions? Ask! Otherwise, stuff my mailbox with your best stuff.

Subject: Submit to the Mark of Excellence Awards

Just another reminder to all of you that the Mark of Excellence Awards are
quickly approaching!

Though schedules are busy with preparations for finals, be sure to take
advantage of the early bird special SPJ is offering to those that submit by
Dec. 11!

Annually, the Society of Professional Journalists presents the Mark of
Excellence Awards honoring the best in student journalism. The awards offer
39 categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism.
Entries are first judged on the regional level, with winners moving on to
the national competition.

DEADLINE: Jan 27, 2010

REQUIREMENTS: You must be enrolled in a college or university and the work
has to have been published or broadcast in 2009.

ENTRY FEES: It costs $9 per entry for current SPJ members and $18 for
nonmembers.

EVEN BETTER EARLY BIRD SPECIAL: However, MU-SPJ is offering you a deal! SPJ
will cover HALF of the fee if you turn your entries in to Patricia Gallagher
Newberry (c/o JRN office, Bachelor Hall 260) with cash or checks made out to
MU-SPJ before 4pm December 11.

And for the first time this year, you can enter online at
http://awards.spj.org/
