Journalist on Summer Freedom story
to visit Miami University March 27
Investigative journalist Jerry Mitchell, known for his pursuit of
“delayed justice” stories from the Civil Rights Era, will present
“Searching for Justice: Righting Wrongs in Mississippi” at Miami
University’s Hall Auditorium on Monday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m.
Since he took on such stories for the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss.,
in 1989, Mitchell has helped put four Klansmen behind bars – including
Edgar Ray Killen, convicted last June in connection with the murders of
Michael Schwerner, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman. The three students
were killed in Mississippi on June 21, 1964, the day after they left
the “Freedom Summer” program in Oxford, Ohio.
Free tickets to Mitchell's speech are now available in the Shriver
Center Box Office. On the 27th, tickets will be available beginning at
6:30 p.m. at Hall Auditorium.
In connection with Mitchell's visit, the Department of Theatre will
offer a 45-minute interactive walking tour about Freedom Summer at 5
p.m. on March 27. Reservations are required to Karen Smith at 9-3053 or
