Positions available at USA TODAY/the Newspaper
APPRENTICESHIP
Since its founding in 1982, USA TODAY has been changing the face of American
journalism. Now the newspaper is making a further commitment to the future
of the industry. Beginning in June, USA TODAY (based in Reston, Va., outside
Washington, D.C.) will create five, year-long postgraduate Apprentice
positions, with one assigned to each of the five main sections of the paper
- News, Life, Money, Sports and Photo & Graphics.
Each USA TODAY Apprentice will:
Pair with a staffer/mentor
Enroll in a structured program with regularly scheduled events and seminars
Receive regular evaluation and constructive critiques
Though a USA TODAY Apprenticeship does not guarantee a permanent job, it
does promote exposure within one of the nationıs largest news and
information companies. Most papers rank real-work experience as a top
indicator when they hire.
November 15, 1999: Application deadline
December: Selection of five USA TODAY Apprentices announced
June, 2000 Apprentice program begins.
Candidates should be college seniors or recent graduates with demonstrated
journalism skills. Field of study is not restricted to journalism but
candidates should have completed either:
Two journalism internships
Or one internship and one year on a campus newspaper
Benefits
$32,000 annually, payable biweekly plus $500 monthly housing allowance

Ongoing placement counseling leading to possible employment at USA TODAY or
one of Gannettıs other newspapers.
