Diamonds and War:
Do Mineral Resources Promote Conflict?
There has been considerable controversy about the linkage between minerals
and conflict in Africa. Non-governmental organizations and some academic
have argued that ³blood diamonds² and important minerals are funding wars.
Some have also argued that consumer actions (including refusal to buy
products from conflict zones) can have a fundamental effect on the nature of
these wars. The talk will examine the actual relationship between minerals
and conflict, especially by tracing the evolution of the financial model for
insurgencies in the post-Cold War period.

Thursday, April 15, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Stephen Lippmann, Ph.D., Assistant
Professor, Department of Sociology and Gerontology, Miami University
Hobby Logics: Crafts and Collecting Under Capitalism
The relationship between work and leisure has changed dramatically over the
course of the 20th Century. This lecture explores changing themes and
patterns in two typical leisure time activities: handicrafts, and
collecting, to uncover changes in the nature of work and capitalism over the
past century-and-a-half.
