RE: Registration info
Here are general tips and information on upcoming registration:
ADMISSION TEST is this Sat., Oct, 21 at 11 in BAC
346. Need to have COMPLETED COM 143 and JRN 101
before taking test. Please make sure you have
also filled out admit-to-major form (available in
BAC 260) and attached a current DARS.
JRN Classes -- NOTE: Pre-majors who have are
completing JRN 101 and/or COM 143 should next
take JRN 201 and their IMS courses. It’s OK to
sign up for these before formal admission to the major.
JRN/IMS 303: Online Journalism. Instructor:
Bettina Fabos. Counts as part of “three of
following” writing courses in JRN major. Email for help to force add.
JRN 316 – need IMS 101P (desktop publishing) as prereq.
COM 211 – for those JRN students interested in
broadcasting and documentaries, COM 211 will now
count as a replacement for two IMS 101 classes.
JRN 421 (capstones) – the topics for two JRN
capstones this spring are Compass magazine and
international journalism (see “comments” section
on online schedule). There is also an AMS 401
capstone taught by JRN faculty member Jim Tobin
on literary journalism that counts.
IMS and COM classes
The JRN program does not control these
classes. For the IMS 101 one-credit sprint
classes, Glenn Platt--director of IMS--opens new
slots for the class during each registration
period so while the classes may look closed, they
usually have some spots for 1st and 2nd year
students. For COM courses that you can’t get
into because of restrictions, please see Kim
Hensley in Mass COMM office, Williams Hall, to
get on waitlist for those courses (let her know
you are a JRN major or pre-major).
Waitlists
There is now a JRN waitlist force-add form
available in BAC 260. For all JRN 101 classes,
we open 10 spaces (out of 24) until 2nd year
students register, then we open 6 more
spaces. There are also sections of JRN 101 being
taught at the Hamilton and Middletown campuses in the spring.
Advising
If you don’t know who your JRN advisor is, please
email me. And my office hours are MW 10-112 and TR 11-12 and by appt.
