Dear JRN students,
Here are a few notes/tips for fall registration. There is now
one JRN 421 capstone listed (the second capstone has been cancelled),
but for some seniors you make also elect the new JRN 350 class on
"specialized journalism" as a capstone. (This class can also
substitute for 417 or 418.) The new 350 class will be taught by '82
Miami alum, Ronald Rollins, who is managing editor for content for
the Dayton Daily News and Cox Ohio Publishing. He is the editor
responsible for features, arts, photo and sports. The topic of his
350 course is "Writing about Arts and Culture." (For future
planning, the topic for the spring '08 JRN 350 class will be "sports
reporting.")
Patti Newberry is the instructor for the JRN 421 capstone. The
main topic is BEAT DEVELOPMENT. In this course, students will assume
the role of "beat reporters," producing portfolio-worthy journalism
off a self-selected beat, learning to develop sources, mine story
lines and develop expertise in an area of coverage. Students will
work with the instructor and working professionals to learn the beat
and produce up to a dozen publishable stories. The course is ideal
for seniors with fewer internships or less real-world experience. For
additional information, contact [log in to unmask] or 9-5893.
If you need to get on a waitlist for a class, waitlist forms are
available in BAC 260. If you need to look over changes in the
curriculum, those new major forms are also available in the office.
Good luck registering.
