Journalism Students:

Here is more information about the two upcoming SPJ seminars/programs I
posted on the
listserv last week. At this point, I have five tentatively interested
students. I can take six
passengers in my car. If the crowd grows, I can see about using a Miami van
or see if a
participating student is willing to drive.

As I noted in the earlier message, we can attend either the Pittsburgh or
the Indianapolis
event. Please let me know which you favor and we'll go with the majority
vote.

Also, I am told we can use some of our SPJ treasury funds toward the cost of
the event.
Assuming that happens, we would share the allotted funds evenly to defray
registration
costs.

Finally, I need CONFIRMED registrations BEFORE Spring Break and may even
need a
check from you by then.

WRITERS WORKSHOP
 * Indianapolis
 * March 30-31, departing 9 a.m. Friday and returning approximately 7 p.m.
Saturday. (This is assuming some of you want to participate in the critique
session, noted
below, which begins at 10:30 a.m.)
 * Speakers/sessions: Helen Thomas, legendary White House correspondent;
Anna
Werner, the TV reporter who broke the Firestone Tire/Ford Explorer story;
and others.
The workshop also includes free student critique sessions, where
professionals will review
submitted clips, scripts or tapes.
 * Registration cost: $65 for students, by March 15. (After that, it shoots
up to
$105/person.)
 * Hotel cost: $129/night. (At four to a room, with tax, that's
$35-$40/night each.)
Hotel reservations are due March 9.
 * This workshop is sponsored in conjunction with the Indiana Collegiate
Press
Association, so there are sure to be lots of other student journalists
there. For more
information, see www.spj.org.

THE MEDIA IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM
 * Pittsburgh
 * March 30-31, departing noon on Friday and returning after midnight on
Saturday
or early Sunday, depending on group preferences.
 * Speakers/sessions: Most sessions relate to interactive and Web-based
journalism,
with speakers from Wall Street Journal's Web site, The Pew Center for Civic
Journalism,
dot.com job prospects and more.
  * Registration cost: $75 for students, by March 22
 * Hotel cost: $99/night. (At four to a room, with tax, that's $30-$35/night
each.)

I look forward to a good journalistic outing at either site.
