Dear Students:

If you are interested or just plain curious about our outstanding study
abroad program in Kosova, please come to the information session at 5 p.m
Thursday in Bachelor 346.

The professors leading the Kosova Summer 2010 program, along with students
from past years, will be there to answer all of your questions and provide
information and application forms. We'll discuss the educational,
journalistic and social sides of the program -- the entire 8-week experience
that students have found so worthwhile during the first two summers of the
program. And we'll have dozens of photos available for you to get a good
sense of the experience for students.

This year, the Kosova group will leave June 14 and return to the United
States on Aug. 9.

The attached two-page flier and poster answer many of the basic questions.
We'll be happy to explain and clarify any aspect of the program on Thursday.

Please keep in mind that the program is open to students from any field of
study, including students from other universities. Students earn 8 Miami
University credits, which are transferrable to other colleges and
universities.

About one-third of the Kosova students in previous years came from majors
other than Journalism and Mass Communication, and they did very well in all
aspects of the program.

So, please invite any of your friends to come to the meeting and check it
out. Everyone is welcome.

I've attached 3 files < the new 2-page flier and the latest poster. People
can also see the updated Kosova 2010 web site in a few days, where they also
will find slide shows with dozens of photos.

As the Kosova 2010 flier says, undergrads earn 8 Miami University
transferrable credits in these courses:
JRN 421 Advanced Reporting Enterprise and In-Depth Journalism. This can
can serve as a capstone course (3 credits)
GEO 410 Advanced Regional Geography The social, political, economic and
ecological historty of the Balkans (3 credits)
JRN 340 Internship at KosovaLive News Agency reporting, wriiting and
editing stories that add depth and humanity to the news (2 credits)

As you think about the program and discuss it with your friends and parents,
here are some points that past students said we should point out:

- This is a rare opportunity to spend 2 months among people who are building
a new democracy, and to tell their stories.

- The Kosova program by nature and by design is interdisciplinary, with an
emphasis on in-depth Journalistic storytelling, It has proven to be a very
worthwhile for students from many other majors, Because it is a small group
and there is a great deal of one-on-one time with me and other editors,
students shouldn't worry about having a lack of formal journalism training.
In the past two summers, about one-third of our students were from other
majors and they did very well in all phases of the work. So long as they
have good research and writing skills, they will make fast progress in
understanding the journalism principles they need to apply to their work.

- The internship is an exceptional one, and we have heard from many our
Kosova students that potential employers are impressed by the experience and
by samples of their reporting. Of course, those stories went on the
KosovaLive website and many were picked up in other countries. Our student
journalists interviewed people from every walk of life, including the
president of the country. This was an exclusive interview and it is an
example of the great access our reporters have to practically anyone in the
country. KosovaLive publishes daily in English and Albanian.

GRAD STUDENTS TOO, NOT JUST UNDERGRADS...
Also, while the program was essentially designed for undergrads, we can
tailor the coursework and internship for grad students who would like this
experience, and see it fitting into their research and studies. They can
sign up for 8-12 hours of graduate credits. We will also have a Graduate
Teaching Assistant (That position is filled for 2010) The GTA also takes 12
hours of credits, of course.

I do urge anyone interested to come to our initial meeting on Thursday, but
if a student has a scheduling conflict and canšt attend, he or she should
talk with me as soon as possible. Išll be happy to meet with any student
this week or in the future. Deadlines are beginning to press on us however,
so students shouldnšt delay in contacting me.

I hope to see you on Thursday.
