MIAMI AWARDS -- The deadline for the Greer-Hepburn and Montaine
journalism awards has been extended to Monday, April 5 at 5 p.m. Entries
should be to Kevin Smith, 360 Bachelor, in mailbox or hand delivered.
The Greer award is given to two senior and the Montaine is given to
two juniors. Each winner will receive $500. Each student must present a
portfolio of 5-10 published articles and a 250-word essay on how they have
grown as a journalistic writer. Articles had to appear in student or
professional publications such as newspapers, magazines or websites.
The entries will be judged by professionals and awarded at the
end-of-the-year annual English department ceremonies.
SPJ -- The Queen City Chapter of the Society of Professional
Journalists is searching for a winner of its annual $500 scholarship. Any
Miami journalism student who will be a junior or senior in 1999-00 is
eligible. You must submit a n application and 250-300 word essay explaining
why you what to be a journalist. There is also a required two-three letters
of recommendation from employers and teachers. Three-six samples of work
must also be submitted. Broadcasters must submit a tape.
Entry forms can be picked up from Kevin Smith's office or from
Patti Gallagher. Traditionally, there have been few applicants.
Deadline is April 23 and the awards is presented on May 14 at the
annual banquet.
OHIO WOMEN -- The Ohio Newspaper Women's Association is seeking
applications for its yearly scholarships. The ONWA give out a $1,000
scholarship and three $500 scholarships. One of the $500 awards is reserved
for a minority candidate. Last year only 13 people in the entire state
entered. Let's go. All the information needed can be obtained from Linda
Crider, 336 Bachelor.
