Subject: 2005 ACES/Ohio editing workshop


Join us for a day of fast-paced, lively, interactive learning at the sixth
annual ACES/Ohio copy-editing workshop Sunday, Oct. 16, at The Plain
Dealer in Cleveland.

The lineup of speakers will be the workshop's biggest yet and features
some of the top trainers in the profession. You'll sharpen your skills and
return to your newsroom with practical advice to share with colleagues.
Many of the speakers are on the American Copy Editors Society's national
board, which will be in town to plan for the 2006 national conference.

The schedule (times and speakers are subject to change, but these are
pretty firm):

8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
   Check-in. No walk-in registrations.

8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
   Optional tours of The Plain Dealer. Breakfast buffet.

9:30 - 10:30 a.m.
Three breakouts (choose one):
   -- Slotting and troubleshooting forum, led by Deirdre Edgar, Portland
Oregonian
   -- Chris Wienandt, Dallas Morning News ("Nip/Tuck: Trimming the Fat from
Stories")
   -- Small-paper panel discussion, led by Scott Toole, Easton (Pa.)

10:40 - 11 a. m.
   Welcome session

11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
   William G. Connolly, New York Times (retired) ("The Qualities of Great
Editors")

12:15 - 1:15 p.m.
   Lunch and "Grammar Smackdown"

1:15 - 2:30 p.m.
   Zoe Friloux, Rocky Mountain News ("Headline Iron Chef")

2:45 - 4 p.m.
   David Kordalski, Cleveland Plain Dealer (wedding words and visuals for
better graphics, pages)

4:15 - 5:15 p.m.
Three breakouts (choose one):
   -- Teresa Schmedding, Daily Herald, suburban Chicago ("Leading vs.
Managing")
   -- Student forum, moderated by Bill Chronister, Columbus Dispatch, and
Joe Marren, Buffalo State College
   -- Improving cutlines, with Paul Corbitt (Columbus Dispatch) and Jeff
Verbus (Canton Repository)

5:15 p.m.
   Optional tours of The Plain Dealer


Sessions will be in the modern Plain Dealer Conference Center in downtown
Cleveland. The center, built in 2002, has free parking and can comfortably
accommodate 120 guests.

A box lunch (sandwiches and sides), breakfast items and
beverages are included in the registration fee, along with workshop
materials and an ACES training CD. Fees are:

-- $10 for students and professionals who are members of ACES or SND --
$15 for student nonmembers
-- $25 for professional nonmembers

You can join ACES when registering and receive the member rate. Companies
will receive one free registration for every 10 paid registrations.

Workshop registrants will receive a discount on registration for the April
20-22, 2006, national conference in Cleveland.

The workshop will be the sixth for ACES/Ohio, a chapter of the nonprofit
American Copy Editors Society. More than 500 copy editors, supervisors,
students and other journalists from newspapers and other publications
large and small in Ohio and nearby states have attended the annual
workshops, including more than 100 at The Plain Dealer in 2002, the last
time we were in northeastern Ohio.

Our mailing list is not comprehensive, so please share this information
with your colleagues.
