Cultures of Consumption: from Hard Work to Hyper-Consumption

Wednesday, March 3, 10:10 am - 11:10 am

Stephen Lippmann, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Department of Sociology and Gerontology, Miami University

This lecture will trace the ideological underpinnings of capitalism from its
emergence, as considered as considered by Max Weber in the Protestant Ethic
and the Spirit of Capitalism, to the modern day. A major transition is
characterized by the replacement of asceticism with hyper-consumption.
