Subject: Svitlana Pyrkalo - Guest Speaker 10/21/11

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to draw your attention and to invite you and your students to attend a guest lecture this Friday, October 21, at 12:20 p.m. in 111 Harrison Hall.
The topic of the talk by Svitlana Pyrkalo is "The Politics of Ukrainian Cultural Journalism." As she notes herself, the focus of her remarks will be: "how media and art interact, why an artist in Ukraine must have a political opinion, and whether it is healthy."

The guest speaker, Svitlana Pyrkalo, is a prominent Ukrainian writer and journalist. Based in London, she is currently Senior Press Officer for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. For over 10 years she worked for the BBC Ukrainian service. She also was responsible for launching and running the BBC Ukrainian Book of the Year prize, which quickly became the most important prize for Ukrainian literature. Although she is no longer employed by the BBC, she still is a member of the prize's jury.

In 1998, she compiled and published the first ever Dictionary of Ukrainian Youth Slang, consisting of 2700 entries. In 1999 her first novel, _Zelena Marharyta_ (Green Margaret), was the first runner up in the contest for the best book by a young Ukrainian author. Since then she has published one more novel, many works of short prose, and translations from English into Ukrainian.

Svitlana Pyrkalo's visit to Miami is co-sponsored by the Havighurst Center, the Journalism Program, and the Communications Department. During this visit to the US, besides Miami, she is only giving two other lectures, one at Harvard, the other at Columbia, so we are in a pretty good company! :) Do not miss this rare and exciting opportunity.

You can find out more about our guest speaker at her personal website, http://pyrkalo.com/

Best wishes,

Vitaly Chernetsky
