If you have completed COM 143, JRN 101 and a minimum of 18 Miami Plan
hours, you are eligible to apply to become one of the first majors in the
new journalism program. (The COM and JRN re-reqs must be completed before
you apply, so that means if you are currently enrolled in either of those
courses, you need to wait until fall to apply to the major.)

If you have met those requirements, here are the next steps to take:
1) Get an "admission to major form" from any journalism faculty member or
from Director Richard Campbell's office (279 Bachelor) or from the English
or Comm departmental office.
2) Complete the form and return it ASAP to Dr. Campbell's office or the
English office. The completed form will serve as your registration for the
grammar/punctuation proficiency test.
3) Be prepared to take the grammar/punctuation proficiency test Saturday
April 2 at 11 a.m. (We will announce the test location to those who are
signed up a few days before the test. It will be given ONLY at that time
and place this semester, although you can also take it in the fall.)

We have tried to fashion the test so that you needn't have had a
journalism class (or knowledge of AP style) to do well. If you want to
practice for the test, we suggest you go to
http://www.longleaf.net/newsroom101/
This site has several excellent interactive grammar and style quizzes and
an instant feedback feature so you can learn from any mistakes.

Any questions about applying to the major, please contact Dr. Campbell at
