this message expands on the earlier message about www.guidestar.org. One of
my colleagues at the Dayton Daily News passed along these tips about using
those nonprofit forms for story ideas.

Here's a couple of short examples of what you can find and how it can be
useful to pretty much any beat...
From University of Dayton's 990:
UD hoops coach Oliver Purnell received $339,906 in salary and $5,459 in
benefits in fiscal 1998-- better than anyone at the college, including
president Brother Fitz, who received $199,470 in salary and benefits.
UD has about $160 million in land and buildings, and $321 million in its
investments portfolio.
From Miami Valley Hospital's 990:
MVH spent $363,565 on computer software and $462,175 on "organ acquisition,"
whatever that might be, in 1997. A Moraine medical lab got more than $12
million in business from the hospital that year.
MVH's president and CEO made nearly a half-million dollars in salary and
another quarter-million in benefits in 1997. And got another $4,527 for his
expense account.
The IRS's charitable exemption covers just about everything; a quick search
on "Dayton" and "Ohio" gave me something like 1,200 hits, from charities as
big as UD to as small as the Oregon Historic District Association and local
soccer clubs. There's probably something in there related to your beat, or a
story you'll cover or edit, be it community, business, sports or whatever.
Take a few minutes to check it out. Be sure to read the intro information on
990s, and try a search-- by name and/or zip code.
