Dear gracious committee-You can tell what I have been doing today - math ed
committee work! What follows is an old business item that we need to
finalize. In the Fall, we recommended changes in the MAT Plan A and B
graduate programs in MTH/STAt. These have been sitting in my folder while
we attended to other things.
Please read the memo to the math/stat graduate committee and review the
proposed changes so we can get this off our agenda at next Wednesday's math
ed committee meeting.
The requirements you see are as we voted to approve them last fall. There
is one minor change, however, that Dave suggested. The change is number 7
under "Additional Requirements". We had approved that this restriction
apply to only MTH 511 and 521, but when Dave read over the draft he asked
why it didn't apply to all courses. I thought that a reasonable
suggestion, so I went ahead and made the change. We, of course, can change
it back to the wqay it wasy originally.
Again, this is your only copy, so download. And, take heart - this is all
you will get from me today!
P.S. Sorry about the spacing and layout. Cut and Paste did that.
MEMORANDUM
To: Graduate Committee
From: Jerry Stonewater for the Math Ed Committee
Re: MAT Plan A and B proposed changes
As you are aware, our current MAT program for secondary-certified teachers
has two plans (A and B). In the past, the academic year Plan A has had
very limited enrollment and students who do enroll in Plan A often request
many substitutions for the course work. Because of these difficulties with
Plan A, the Math Ed Committee is recommending that Plan A be eliminated
entirely and that Plan B include a list of approved substitutions which are
outlined below.
The net effects of this recommendation are that 1) students enrolling
during summers only would continue to take courses as outlined in the
current Plan B program and 2) students who want to take course work during
the academic year would have the option of completing the MAT degree in a
"summer-academic year-summer" type of sequence. In case 2) students would
take the regular MAT-Plan B courses during their summer enrollment, but
could make appropriate substitutions during their academic year enrollment.
The Math Ed Committee feels that the Plan B courses (604, 605, etc.),
which were designed to connect mathematical content to teaching high school
mathematics, are best suited for all MAT students, but that we need to find
suitable ways to accommodate students who want the academic year option.
The suggested list of courses and approved substitutions recommended by the
committee is attached. Please consider this as a motion from the Math Ed
Committee.
Plan B Required MTH/STA Courses (18 hrs) Approved substitutions
Students enrolled in the MAT program may make at most two of the following
substitutions for their 18 hrs of required MTH/STA courses:

Additional Requirements
1. At least 12 hours must be at the 600-level (university requirement).
2. 6 hours of course work must be taken in EDT mathematics
education courses at the 500, or 600-level.
3. 6 hours of pre-approved electives must be taken to enhance the
student's ability as a teacher.
4. Minimum hours required must total at least 30.
5. 18 hours must be in MTH/STA courses with at most two courses
substituted from the above list.
6. All courses must be approved in advance by the student's advisor.
7. For any of the courses in the approved substitution list above,
if a student has credit for an equivalent course as an
undergraduate, these courses may not be taken.
*If EDT 565 is taken to substitute for MTH 508, a MTH/STA elective must be
used to bring the total MTH/STA hours to 18.
** If a student has credit for an equivalent 400-level course from Miami as
an undergraduate, these courses may not be taken. In the case of MTH
411/511, there is really no viable alternative that is guaranteed to be
offered. Thus, any 500 or 600-level math course may be taken as a
substitution.
***May be taken as a replacement for MTH 607 only if student has the
equivalent of MTH 421 as an undergraduate.
