Subject:Math Ed Search position description
The following is a draft of the math ed position description.  Comments?
 
The Department of Mathematics and Sttaistics invites applications for a tenure
track mathematics education position at the Assistant Professor level starting
Fall 1996.  Successful candidates must have completed a doctorate in mathematic
s education and a master's degree or equivalent in mathematics or statistics by
 August, 1996.  They must also have a commitment to and evidence of success in
teaching and research.  Elementary or secondary teaching experience is desirabl
e.
 
Responsibilities of the position include:
  teaching mathematics content courses for elementary and secondary education
majors and upper division mathematics and statistics courses.  Summer teaching
in the Master of Arts in Teaching graduate program for certified secondary
teachers is possible, as is teaching mathematics methods courses.
 
  developing an active research program in some area of mathematics education,
including publications, grant writing, and participation in externally funded
projects.
 
  providing service, both to the university and to the profession, including
inservice work with area schools and curriculum development and evaluation or
assessment projects.
 
Miami offers programs in mathematics education for elementary and secondary
school teachers  at the baccalaureate and master's levels with over 200
undergraduate certification majors and 20 graduate students.  Current members o
f the mathematics eduation group are involved in numerous professional activiti
es at the state and national level, are directing externally funded grant proje
cts to develop curricula and provide teacher training for all levels of schools
, and are active in mathematics education research.  The mathematics education
group enjoys a good working relationship with the Depatment of Teacher Educatio
n.
 
Applicants should send a letter of application that includes a statement about
their teaching and research, along with a curriculum vita.  They should
also arrange for three letters of reference to be sent.  Applications will be a
ccepted until   the position is filled; however, screening of applications will
