I believe that the position outlined by Jerry in his e-mail to us on
December 6 is a reasonable compromise for now. We surely want to
elementary math specialists experience something like MTH 407.

If we get an occasional student who shows strong promise for becoming
an elementary math specialist, but who has been away from math for a
long time and needs to review precaclulus, let's consider their
petition to substitute 3 credits from MTH 125 for SOME required
MTH course on a case-by case basis.

Ordinarily, such a petition should be submitted by the beginning of
the student's junior year, and the student should present some
evidence (e.g. A's in MTH 117 and 218) that she or he is otherwise
a strong candidate for a license to teach mathematics.

ANOTHER MATTER FOR CONSIDERATION

We need to publicize our summer course offerings earlier than we did
last year. Let's make sure that all of the relevant information
about courses is available this month. Will someone on the
committee be responsible for coordinating the preparation of a flyer
and seeing that it gets mailed early next semester?
