I have recently come across an Ohio Curriculum Guide for mathematics
in grades 7-10 that recommends such things as:

   *  the heuristic method of teaching;
   *  laboratory work in geometry;
   *  the discovery method of learning;
   * an assessment plan that includes alternatives to standardized
       tests;
   * an emphasis on problem solving throughout the mathematics
       curriculum;
   *  "teach, don't tell."

It was written by H.C. Christofferson (Miami), H.P. Fawcett (Ohio
State) , and R. L. Morton (Ohio U.) -- three names that are still
revered by mathematics educators in Ohio -- and published in 1934.
