RE: Licensure for Teachers of Children from Birth through Age 8

I have a response (dated 3/22/96) from Virginia MIlner Purdy, President of the
Ohio State Board of Education, in response to the Committee's letter regarding
the proposed licensure of teachers of children from birth through age 8. I've
copied the text below.

I now appears that there will be next round in this "discussion" of licensure.
Acting in accord with the Principle of Political Paralysis, deliberations
thus far have resulted in a decision to **permit the consideration** of new
rules of licensure (or something like that). The next phase is (I think) is
to actually consider those rules. Hence, we may have to dust off the letters
for Round #2.

I will attempt to sort out this nonsense with some folks whose brains are
sufficiently warped as to have some understanding of how Columbus creeps
along.

Here's the response from Ms. Purdy. Reads like Stock Response 2234.

Dear Dr. Kansky:

I have received your recent letter expressing concern over the proposal to
have teacher licensure at three levels -- early childhood, middle grades, and
adolescent. Your comments will be forwarded to our people who are working on
the standards revision process. Also, let me assure you that the Board itself
will give careful consideration to input received from the field before making
any final decisions about our new teacher licensure standards.

Thank you for your concern of Ohio's teachers and students.

Sincerely,
Virginia Milner Purdy
President
