Fellow Math Education committee Members:

I have read the "Mathematically Correct" position paper, forwarded to
us by Bob Kansky, and I find myself in agreement with many of their
points (especially in Section II). On the other hand, their ideas
about a "standard syllabus" for each math course seem weak, and the
proposal for national exams will surely be controversial.

I suggest that we organize a Collegiate Mathematics Education
Seminar again next fall and study (and debate) some of the
"Mathematically Correct" theses as they relate to mathematics in
grades 13-14. I would also like to study the monograph on "Authentic
Instruction and Assessment" by Walter Secada.
