1. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov 13 at 4 in BAC.

At our meeing this week (Oct 30) we made good progress examining the math
concentration for elementary education majors. Our decisions are as follows.
I will take responsibility for making sure the appropriate paper work gets
started.

a. Concentration requirements as modified by the committee:
MTH 115/117 - 3cr. (Note: We will only accept 3 of the 4
credits towards the concentration if student takes MTH 115.)
      MTH 218 3cr.
MTH 141 or MTH 151 4 or 5 cr (See explanation below about new MTH 141)
MTH 222 or 231 or 331 3 cr. (Rouse suggested adding 331 for those
interested in a more challenging course.)
      MTH 261 or 368 4 cr.
Elective 2-3 cr (Note: add change: "Any course numbered
MTH 125 or above; accept only 3 credits
                                       towards concentration for MTH 125)
                                      (Rationale explained below.)

Notes: The MTH 125 was added to the elective list to accomplish two things.
The branch campus folks felt that this course is appropriately taught for
elementary education majors - i.e. it is calculator intensive, taught by
faculty and generally models pedogogy we want the students to model. MTH 123
is not included, because it is usually not calculator intensive and is
primarily taught by grad assistant on the Oxford campus. Note that MTH 123
is not acceptable for the concentration.)

MTH 141 for 4 credits is to be developed as "Calculus for Elementary Ed Majors"
Stonewater will draft some preliminary ideas. The intent is to build a
calculus course that will accomplish two goals: First, it will relate basic
ideas of calculus to teaching K-8 (examples in Stonewater proposal, forth-
coming) and it will maintain a level of computational ability currently met in
MTH 151. This is so the student will bee able to meet prereqs for higher level
math/stat courses. For most concentration folks, this is usually only their
stat requirement.

b. Propose MTH 407 as a capstone. We decided not to include it as a
requirement to allow for MTH 125, but becasue we feel it is an important course
the capstone will funnel many (?) students into the course and kill two
birds with one stone(water?). They can "double-dip" Miami plan and
concentration requirements - a problem for el ed math majors.

c. Change Thematic Sequence to reflect changes in the concentration
requirements. Net effect of this is that the Thematic Sequence will look like:
                MTH 141 or 151
                MTH 222, or 231 or 331
                Stat 368

d. Develop proposal for new MTH 141.

I think this covers what we discussed and approved at our last meeting. If
I have any misrepresentations in these minutes, please let me know. Other-
wise, consider them approved by the committee. Jerry
