I agree somewhat with Peters on the independent contractor movement, but I'm
not sure I'd go as far as he would. I don't think "all" of us will be moving
from company to company, project to project for the rest of our lives, but it
seems attractive to me personally. I talked with Peters a couple months back
and he admits that some of this thinking is the result of his being brought
up so close to Silicon Valley.
I've had some conversations with programming gurus and this is very much the
way they live, by the seat of their pants relying on only their credentials
and skills. It works for them.
I'm working on a story right now about the possibility of "training" being
the new cornerstone the employment contract. Companies can't promise job
security anymore, but they can provide what GE calls "employability for
life"--giving employees the training they need to always be employable,
either with GE or with someone else. I think what you are talking about is a
piece of my puzzle.
