Could you possibly be running out of disk space.  There appears to be a bug
in the current version of NEWS that will cause this behavior if you run out
of NEWS.  I've looked into correcting this problem and it's going to take
some work to fix.  I'll post more information to this newsgroup when I do
get the problem fixed.
