Generally, the UNCOMPRESS command on the VAX looks for a file with a _Z
extension on the end.  For example, test.tar_z.  Try renaming the file to
something with a _z on the end and see if that works.  For example,
    $ RENAME TEST.Z TEST.TXT_Z
