AKA: Requiem for a Data switch

Attention: All PUTS (Plain Ugly Terminal Service) clients:

Miami University will discontinue dial-in services through
the 529-4999, 529-2161 and 529-6114 telephone numbers
effective Friday, August 15. In addition, unauthenticated
dial-in access to MUnet from all first year residence
halls will be discontinued. (Authenticated PUTS access
from upper class residence halls will continue through the
1997-1998 academic year.) First year hall residents may
continue to access services through either a Miami
Ethernet network connection (recommended) or through
another Internet Service Provider. (Please note: clients
choosing another ISP will not be able to use any Miami
University resources, including certain web pages and
library databases, which are restricted to the Miami
community.) PUTS access will remain available through the
523-0003 and 521-7700 numbers. However, software settings
must be reconfigured to 8 bit, no parity, 1 stop bit.
MiamiU (IBM VM/CMS) access will also require some key map
table conversion. Look for a new version of Kermit,
incorporating the new settings, together with complete
instructions for the same cost (one-dollar) arriving soon
at the Copy Center in Gaskill Hall. The fall 1997 edition
of the MUnet software CD-ROM includes this new version.

For Inquiring Minds -- Why:
Miami's (Gandalf) data switch, the electronic device
directing PUTS dial-in connections to centrally supported
host systems, must retire. Service from the targeted
telephone numbers must be discontinued because it relies
on this data switch. The modem capacity from the
decommissioned lines will move to the 523-0003 number,
increasing both the total number of modems available for
PPP network dial-in access (to 240) and the number of
lines available from off campus locations.

Please direct any questions to the MCIS Help Desk by
electronic mail at [log in to unmask] or by telephone at
529-7900.

Thank you.
