Unfortunately, no.  This is probably one of the most requested features
that I've heard for NEWS (other than being threaded).  I've taken a quick
look at the code to see what it would take to implement.  It doesn't look
too hard, but I've never gotten around to adding it.  If anyone is feeling
adventurous, I'd gladly help anyone who would be interested in looking into
this.
 
The closest thing I've found is something like:
  NEWS> select rec.
which will take you to the last group in the rec hierarchy.
