                     *** OCEAN becomes MIAVX1 ***
                     ******************************

On May 7, 1994, the MIAVX1 system will switch from the current VAX
processor to an Alpha processor. Many people have been using this system
under the name OCEAN. Below is a checklist users may use to insure that
the translation occurs smoothly:

1) Read Changes lists - The news message "*** Alpha - App & Command
changes ***" lists several changes in applications and commands between
the VAX and the Alpha. The news message "*** Alpha - Prog Language
changes ***" lists several changes in the programming languages between
    the VAX and the Alpha.

2) Recompile Executable files - The Alpha processor uses a different
executable file than the VAX processor. In order to use any .EXE file
on the Alpha, the program must be recompiled or translated. All
"system" files (the editor, NEWS, etc) have been recompiled for users
    already.

3) Remove references to OCEAN - After the conversion, the name OCEAN will
no longer be used external to the system. Any references to the TCP/IP
host name "OCEAN.MUOHIO.EDU", the bitnet name "OCEAN", the DECNET name
"OCEAN" or the Gandalf classes "O" or "OCEAN", should not be used. In
addition, the ip address 134.53.2.11 will no longer access the Alpha
    system.

After the May 7th conversion, the VAX only be accessible to those who have
made special arrangements to use the system.
