Well, if you can excuse me if I get a little testy in this message,
but the data switch just seems to like to act up. I don't know why,
when I post about it it seems to get ignored (not even a "We'll look
into it). Maybe if I post this to enough groups?

Symptom 1: Modem connects. Service does not respond.
Symptom 2: Modem connects. Service responds, but is slower than
mollasses (right onw, for example I'm typing in the dark because
I'm typing faster than it is appearing on the screen).
Symptom 3: Archie is broke. It was broke on the old VAX. It is
now broke on phoenix. It is also broke on the Next. You type
archie, and wait, and wait, and wait, and get kicked off for not
typing something within the allotted time.
Symptom 4: FTP keeps doing odd things. It tells you that the
socket you are (were) using is already in use. It also times out
sometimes with no explanation.
Symptom 5: Occasional on-campus disruption of services. General
slow-down of all telnet and ftp sessions with occasional termination
of off-campus ttelnet and ftp sessions. Again, no errors many times
(except a sudden "closed by foreign host").

What I'd really like to know is if anyone even knows what the
problem(s) is/are. Are they related, or does it only appear so?
