Miami Computing & Information Services (MCIS) wishes to publicly express its
thanks to the University Libraries for assuming management of the Miami
University community's access to Mead Data Central's LEXIS / NEXIS database
services effective Monday, 21 March 1994.
* For several years, access to LEXIS / NEXIS has been provided through the
MCIS OpenVMS platform (MiaVX1 and more recently, OCEAN). While Mead Data
Central's contract with MCIS has always specified that LEXIS / NEXIS
access must be used only for directly course-related research purposes,
there has not been an enforcement mechanism in place through MCIS to
ensure compliance with the terms of the contract.
* Effective 15 March 1994, Mead Data Central cancelled its contract with
MCIS, citing our failure to enforce appropriate use of their databases,
and terminated MCIS access to LEXIS / NEXIS.
* The University Libraries have for some time had a separate contract with
Mead Data Central to provide on-site LEXIS / NEXIS database access from
the Reference and Document areas of King Library and the Science Library
in Hughes Laboratories on the Oxford campus.
* MCIS and the University Libraries were in the process of planning the
transfer of all LEXIS / NEXIS access to the Libraries at the end of this
semester, when MCIS' contract was terminated by Mead last week.
* The Libraries agreed, on very short notice, to assume University wide
responsibility for access to LEXIS / NEXIS, thus assuring virtually
uninterrupted access, albeit through different means.
MCIS thanks the University Libraries for stepping in to maintain the Miami
University community's access to these important remote database resources.
