Earlier this afternoon (Sunday, 5 Feb 1995), the DEC OpenVMS
system in Oxford (MiaVX1) experienced unanticipated difficulties due
to a device conflict arising from installation of temporary hardware.

A general system slowdown developed about 1:30pm and quickly
escalated, resulting in the machine slowing to a crawl, refusing to
allow new logins, and finally, nearly stopping altogether. It became
necessary to shutdown and restart the system in order to restore
service. Service was completely restored by 3:30pm.

Between 1:30 and 3:30pm, all MiaVX1 services were adversely
affected, as were the following University-wide services:
                         Miami Root (WWW)
                          NetNews / NNTP
                          World Wide Web

MCIS regrets any inconvenience this service irregularity and
interruption may have caused our clients.
