Miami University's Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) server,
NNTP.MUOhio.Edu (a/k/a Rose), experienced problems this past weekend,
9-10 March (Saturday-Sunday), when it ran out of disk space repeatedly.
As a result of the ever increasing volume of NetNews traffic
(especially in the alt.* hieracrchy) and a finite amount of disk space
to accommodate that traffic, retention times have been adjusted as
follows:
NetNews hierarchy Retention was: Retention is:
alt.* 3 days 24 hours
mu.* 180 days 120 days
all others 3 days 3 days
It is hoped these reduced retention times will help ease the disk space
problems the NetNews server is experiencing, thus keeping interruptions
to NetNews service at a minimum.
Some clients may have received error messages over the weekend when
they attempted to post to various newsgroups. These error messages would
have referred to disk or spool space being "full." These error messages
(on both centrally managed, multi-user systems, MiamiU and MiaVX1) referred
to the NetNews server's disk and spool space, not that of individual users.
Miami Computing & Information Services (MCIS) regrets any inconvenience
these problems may have caused our clients throughout the University.
