                         * New Version of NEWS *
                         ***********************

MCIS has just installed a new version of NEWS on the MIAVX1 system. This
new version of NEWS has the following new features:

o The left and right arrow keys are now synonyms for CLOSE and OPEN,
respectively. With this addition, users can now navigate NEWS in a
fashion similar to other programs on the system (WWW, Gopher, etc).
o The NEWSRC.;1 file should now be CONSIDERABLY smaller. This version
NEWS only stores information in the NEWSRC.;1 file for newsgroups that
users have read, are registered to, or have included in a class
definition. Typically, users will save approximately 300 blocks of disk
space with this new version of NEWS.
o The system now does a better job checking for disk quota problems. The
previous version of NEWS would occasionally corrupt the NEWSRC.;1 file if
the user exceeded their disk quota. We believe that this new version
  will correct this bug.
o Using the SEARCH command from the newsgroup level will now search for a
  substring in a newsgroup name.
o The file SYS$LOGIN:NEWS.INI can now be used to initialize NEWS. Any
NEWS commands contained within will be executed when NEWS starts up.

Please direct any comments or questions concerning this new version of NEWS
to the MCIS HelpDesk at 529-7900.
