First, this message should have gone to the mu.comp.os.openvms newsgroup
rather than the mu.comp.os.vm-cms newsgroup.  I am crossposting this to
both groups.
 
Now, to your question...
 
The *.MAI files generally correspond to mail messages that you've
received.  The system doesn't allow you to delete these, by default.  You
should instead delete the corresponding e-mail message.  After the mail
message is deleted, the system will automatically delete the .MAI file that
corresponds to it.
