This is a common problem that can be caused in various ways.  First off,
there is a 99% change that there is no new mail corresponding to the
message you're getting.
 
To fix the problem, read all of your new mail and then issue the command:
 
     EMAIL> SET NEW_MAIL_COUNT 0
