Margaret and Everyone,

Margaret, thanks for the CW minor doc--it looks great. Not just for the CW dept., but also for the regional campuses. On the regionals, CW apparently is the most popular English degree concentration--by a pretty wide margin, if memory serves. Offering a CW minor could draw even more regional students and increase the number of CW courses offered on the regional campuses, and eventually send more CW students to Oxford.

Serendipitously, Marianne Cotugno, Coordinator of the MUM English Coordinatorship, has just recently begun pursuing more and better PR for CW on the regionals.

Two relevant side notes: 1) While I am obviously The Best CW Faculty on the Regionals Ever, we do have a few other fac who are very qualified and willing to teach introductory and advanced CW on the regionals, including online courses. That fact might help with further planning. 2) Qualified regional fac could ease the burden of creating/offering new CW courses. In fact, I'd bet the regional English/CW fac could come up with some interesting new CW course ideas that could mutually benefit the regional CW program and the CW Dept as a whole.

Eric MUM

Hi Margaret,

thanks for this.

It is a good basis and you're quite right that we could add/swap out more courses in the mix, as and when we can get them through the undergraduate committee.

I'm pretty sure that we could get something into that list that looks more like Electronic Literature / Cybertexts, for example (that would appeal to AIMS and CMA students). Having a course on the Graphic Novel would be wonderful and could be cross-listed with SFA, as could Screenwriting.

My sense from talking with Patrick about this last week is that we could pretty much just write this minor now. So, maybe that can a goal for the end of this semester?

In any case, we meet as agreed today, same time and same place next Wednesday and work from the Minor out in a revision of the Major.

AND:

- I'll try to draft something early next week by way of a little report on where we're at to Susan Ewing and run it by all of you good people here before I send it on to her.

- 312 has reached 11 btw . . . so it might breath. We clearly need to drop one capstone next year and just offer one in each semester. Literature is in an even worse position and PW is professional, which as i remarked to Heidi yesterday sort of makes the rest of us Unprofessional . . i don't enjoy the rhetorical low ground so much.

This is a great start Margaret.

Onwards,

cris

I just want to be sure we design something flexible, sustainable, and long-lasting (hard to predict, I know). It should be relatively easy to cut courses within the BA, and could be relatively easy to add a minor. If we make the smaller changes first--cutting credit hours from the major, adding a minor--I think we could fill our classrooms. Then we can go about designing our dream major.

I've been developing about creativity for some time and will try to share that with you before we gather next week.
