Subject: i have forwarded the following to Debbie - it'snot set in stone, just some forethoughts towards the Department Retreat tomorrow

Hi Debbie,

the CW cohort has spoken, muttered, whispered and so forth.

We want to look closely at the BA / MA. CW initiated the program and has been extremely selective, with good reason and to great success. There were two applicants in the past year, willing to pay their way. Eric advises me that we declined to accept them, though one candidate was quite close.

CW would like to move strongly in the direction of more international and inter-national and less nationally bounded literatures; mere and more transatlanticism is not our emphasis in this respect. This might require readdressing the curriculum. There is some stomach for talk about curriculum change anyway.

CW, in particular poetry, is keen to explore issues of translation and polylingualism and even Englishes (rather than a monolithic English). We are actively programming to that end.

CW is keen to foreground opportunities for internships. We have been increasingly doing so in the publishing industry for the past several years. This is part of a commitment that we share to professionalize the program more.

CW is keen to pursue book arts and electronic book production and print technologies to expand on our extant assignments that students produce books for some of our classes. To this end we hope to make a student Tech proposal during this semester.

CW is moving forwards with its Low Res MFA program proposal. Right now tat proposal is with the Graduate Council and is on their agenda for a meeting on September 11th at which Dr. Tuma will represent our best interests.

CW has received a major grant from the Howe to upgrade our delivery of 226, our Introduction to Creative Writing class. A core of CW faculty will be working on this during throughout this academic year.

CW is concerned about the implications for CW faculty and students on the regional campuses arising out of the creation of the new Division and the signal being given within that division. This has been flagged up by Eric Melbye. We would like to be able to maintain and even to strengthen ties and planning across and between campuses and provide opportunities not only for 226 to be taught regularly but also for CW faculty at all campuses to have the opportunity to teach at least at the 300 level.

Cathy Wagner will talk a little about the poetry track - Margaret Luongo will talk a little about the Fiction Track - Jody Bates will talk a little about issues in the profession, internships, publishing - Brian Roley will talk a little about developments in creative nonfiction and screenplay courses.

Looking forwards,

cris
