Dear Eric,

I can't open docx, so have no definite reaction as yet, BUT unless swome windfall comes through. we're already paying ridiculously small stipends to established writers this year and I think we should simply invite fewer in 2012-3 at this level of funding, so we can offer more money to fewer readers. If she's gotten a favorable response from Ted Kooser, it probably implies she writes in an extremely plain straightforward style (akin to chopped prose), which seems to be his taste on his poetry blog, which I (usually boringly) receive. But I'm saying this with prejudice, and for the moment, in ignorance. I'll just look her up.

On a similar note to yours, Garth Greenwell is aiming for the first week in April to read at Miami. He may be with Ilya Kaminsky, well-known poet, at USC, close friend, and Kaminsky's wife, Katie, also a published fiction writer. Kaminsky, for what it's worth, has been mentioned to me by a number of Miami poets (grad and undergrad) over the years as an important influence on them and their work! HE would come very cheaply, if he's actually free to go on GG's reading tour at that time. Just a thought. More information to come, when I get it (soon, I hope). All contingent on current unknown factors. Greenwell's reading, of course, is covered by MU Press.... I'll try to reserve a date when I know more specifically. Catherine Bowman seems to have accepted out paltry offer and would read sometime second semester. Again, I'm hoping we can raise the stipends of some people we've invited to a less embarrassing level.

I hope you'll enjoy the rest of your, pre-Summer I, China idyll.

David

China Greetings,

      Hey, Everyone,

I suggested she send along a copy of the book, and said that I would defer to my esteemed colleagues in poetry. Pretty organized, planning for 2012-2013.....

Subject: 2012-2013 Academic Year Programming Suggestion: Jehanne Dubrow and "Stateside"

Dear Professor Goodman:

I am writing to inquire about the possibility of programming Jehanne Dubrow for a poetry reading at Miami University during the 2012-2013 academic year. I am the manager and press agent for my daughter Jehanne and would like to acquaint your creative writing students and faculty with her work. Jehanne is a poet, essayist, academic, and a military spouse.

Jehanne's third poetry collection, Stateside (Northwestern UP 2010), with a foreword by former U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize Winner Ted Kooser, examines her experiences as a "milspouse" - a Navy wife - looking at the before, during and after of a deployment. Although the soldier-poet has long been a recognized presence in literature, the military wife represents an entirely new voice in the poetry of war. The last military wife to be portrayed fully in poetry was Penelope in "The Odyssey", which was over 2,000 years ago! With Stateside, Jehanne hopes to expand poetry's depiction of war to include a modern feminine viewpoint of what it means to be "married to the military".

There is considerable interest in Jehanne's work in the military and civilian communities and in scholarly circles. Jehanne has discussed and read selections from the book at the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the Naval War College, the U.S. Department of State, the West Chester Poetry Center, the Sewanee Writers' Conference, and at a number of universities. Stateside is also being taught at the Naval Academy and other colleges.

Stateside has been featured on NPR's Fresh Air, the PBS NewsHour "Art Beat" Blog, Poetry Daily, the Academy of American Poets website, and at the Academy of American Poets Summer Reading Series in Central Park in New York City. The Virginian-Pilot, Stars and Stripes, and Government Executive have published feature stories on Jehanne, the book, and her writing workshops for military veterans.

Most recently, Stateside was winner of the 2011 Society of Midland Authors Award in Poetry and the 2010 Los Angeles Book Festival Award in Poetry. It was also named a 2010 ForeWord Book of the Year Finalist in Poetry.

You can visit Jehanne's website www.jehannedubrow.com <http://www.jehannedubrow.com/> for the latest information about her poetry, reviews, and creative nonfiction.

If you would like to see more of Jehanne's work, please let me know and I'll be happy to mail you a copy of Stateside. Attached is a publicity sheet for the book. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely yours,

Jeannette P. Dubrow
