Cris,
That's a generous offer and on behalf of the grad students, I applaud
you. I don't think they've ever gotten more than $100 each for that award,
by the way. We began giving it out because there was the undergraduate
Havighurst, and only discovered after some years that the Havighurst was
undergrad only, and then began years of my cajoling money from successive
chairs to pay for the Outstanding Grad student.
The way to make the money available is to give Rachel a check made out
to the Alumni Fund, which means the department can spend it however it
chooses. If you do it that way, you'll be able to deduct it on your taxes as
a charitable contribution, if you're so inclined.
And so, now we need the outstanding grad award nominees, always given to
a second year.
By the way, the Graduate Writing Awards, judged by David, were awarded
as follows:
Fiction Winner: Matt Weinkam ($200)
Fiction Honorable Mention: Michelle Lawrence ($50)
Poetry Winner: Tasha Golden ($200)
Poetry Honorable Mention: Alla V ($50)
I've asked Matt and Tasha to give brief readings and the end of awards
this coming Wednesday.
