Would it make sense to apply for a $5000 grant to work on 226? Anyone interested?

Subject: Grants ($5000 and $2000) for Miami Faculty from Howe Center for Writing Excellence

Dear Faculty Colleagues,
The Howe Center for Writing Excellence invites you to submit proposals for two kinds of grants focused on enhancing the writing skills of all our students and increasing their ability to learn through writing.
• $5,000 grants for high-impact projects that benefit large numbers of students annually or benefit students over an extended period. For example, these grants have supported projects that help students learn to write better and learn more in large-enrollment and multi-section courses. They have also been used to coordinate writing assignments and instruction across sets of related courses within a major. This year, we plan to award up to three of these grants, which are given to groups of faculty in the same department or program.

• $2,000 grants for sharply focused projects aimed at understanding student writing, improving its teaching, or using writing as a tool for enhancing student learning of course content. Many of the projects supported by these grants have focused on improving the writing assignments in a single course. Others have been research projects examining well-defined questions about student writing at Miami. These grants are awarded to individual faculty or small groups of collaborators. We plan to award up to six of these grants to individual faculty members or small groups of collaborators.

Both types of grants may be used during summer 2012, the 2012-2013 academic year, or both. Past recipients have published articles on their projects and received additional Howe Center support to present papers on their projects at national and international conferences.

DEADLINE FOR PROPOSALSThe deadline for proposals is Friday, April 13, 2012. Before submitting a proposal, applicants must have a pre-proposal meeting with Howe Center Director, Paul Anderson. Full directions for applying are given at the end of this email.
